In 2016 the DOC Vernaccia di San Gimignano turned 50 years old and celebrated its great tradition looking towards the future. Because of this celebration, we've decided to prepare a selected production of 2016 Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
Vernaccia di San Gimignano is a grape variety which was first cultivated on the hills of San Gimignano in clay schist soils dating back to the Pliocene era. It was the first grape variety to be awarded, in 1966, the Denomination of Controlled Origin and in 1993, the D.O.C.G. Straw yellow color tending to golden with age. Fine, penetrating, fresh, fruity bouquet and a delicate, fruity flavour with a characteristic bitterish aftertaste.
It is not an aromatic or semi-aromatic wine, it is not easily captivating as many white wines, but it wins in the long run: in a word, special. The color is straw yellow, clear and bright, with greenish reflections. The fragrance is articulated, dense and delicate with notes that recall first broom and lime, then fresh fruits, such as green apple, pear and grapefruit.
The taste is balanced, dry, fragrant thanks to a good acidity that highlights the fruity and citrus aromas. The aftertaste is persistent and slightly bitter. It should be served a bit warmer than other white wines, at 10-11 degrees Celsius, and tasted in front of a summer sunset.
