The History of Poggio Moreto

In 2024 Pierluigi Giachi acquired Poggio Moreto, a historic estate and winery in the municipality of Scansano, in Maremma, purchased in 1998 by Tenute Guicciardini Strozzi, which made it one of the family's first investments in Maremma in the Morellino di Scansano sector.

The Scansano area, known for the production of Morellino di Scansano, has ancient origins, with a history linked to the Etruscan-Roman settlement and the development of the village in the Middle Ages under the Aldobrandeschi family, before passing to the Sforza and then to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

The History of Poggio Moreto - Acquisition

The Poggio Moreto estate, part of the Morellino di Scansano circuit, was purchased by Tenute Guicciardini Strozzi in 1998, marking an important investment by the family in the Maremma territory and subsequently was purchased by Tenuta Torciano of Pierluigi Giachi

The Heritage of Montemassi

The estate was purchased by Tenuta Torciano of Pierluigi Giachi in 2024, from which one can admire one of the most suggestive panoramas of Maremma. The company is located near the beautiful village of Montemassi, liberated in the Middle Ages by Knight Guidoriccio on behalf of the Republic of Siena.

The quantity of large stones, which emerged during the conversion work to vineyards, gave inspiration for the current name. Here you can breathe the air of medieval history, symbolized by the immense evocative charm of the ancient settlement of Montemassi.

The company extends with vineyards dedicated to Sangiovese, Petit Verdot, Ancellotta and other interesting experimental grape varieties. In 2004, the construction of a new winery was completed, whose architecture is perfectly integrated into the enchanting landscape.

The Territory and Its Vocation

New Tuscan Winemaking Frontier

A new Tuscan winemaking frontier, this territory extends in the center of Maremma Grossetana, dividing the sea from the metalliferous hills. Like many mines and extraction quarries in the area, the territory originated from important geological phenomena.

Today this area is converted to agriculture and particularly to viticulture, the result of a pioneering flow of important Italian producers. The microclimate and agronomic characteristics give this territory ideal characteristics for wine production.

The Origins of Morellino

The origins of the wine tradition in Scansano date back to 1600. The name "Morellino" is linked to the morello horses used in the Middle Ages for transport, and the production of Sangiovese-based wine has always been a constant in Maremma.

The DOC of Morellino di Scansano was born in 1978, becoming DOCG with the 2007 harvest.

The Vineyards of Poggio Moreto Today

Located in the municipality of Scansano, Poggio Moreto extends entirely over a splendid hill with vineyards dedicated to the cultivation of Sangiovese and complementary varieties, such as Ciliegiolo, and experimental ones, such as Malbec. In 2004, the winemaking cellar work was completed, the result of the expansion and modification of the pre-existing one.

Between Monte Amiata and the Tyrrhenian Sea

One of the main centers of the Maremma hills, located halfway between Monte Amiata and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its territory enjoyed important agricultural reclamation at the beginning of 1600 and subsequent latifundist policies. The company is located on the road that connects the Aurelia to the capital, straddling the valleys of Ombrone and Albegna.

An area rich in archaeological finds, it enjoys abundant rainfall, concentrated particularly in autumn and spring. The hills let the warmth of the sea breezes and Mediterranean sun filter through, creating the most favorable conditions for grape cultivation.

Poggio Moreto Today

The estate is a modern winery that produces Morellino di Scansano, a wine appreciated internationally.

The estate was purchased by Prince Strozzi in 2000, from which one can admire one of the most suggestive panoramas of Maremma. The company is located near the beautiful village of Montemassi, liberated in the Middle Ages by Knight Guidoriccio on behalf of the Republic of Siena.

The History of Scansano and Morellino

  • 6th and 3rd century B.C. - Ancient Origins

The Scansano area was inhabited by the Etruscans between the 6th and 3rd centuries B.C., with an economy based on vine cultivation and wine export. The Romans completed the conquest of the area in 280 B.C.

  • 1273 - Middle Ages

The village of Scansano developed in the Middle Ages, becoming property of the Aldobrandeschi family in 1273. The Sforza family acquired control of the territory in the 15th century, but at the end of the same century ceded it to Siena.

  • 1615 - Tuscan Dominion

In 1615, Scansano became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, and the Lorena, the new dukes, implemented reclamation interventions and favored trade.

  • 1780-1897 - Administrative Role

Between 1780 and 1897, Scansano became a "vice capital" of the province of Grosseto, because in summer the offices moved here from the marshy and unhealthy areas of the plain.

  • 1600 - Birth of Morellino

The origins of the wine tradition in Scansano date back to 1600. The name "Morellino" is linked to the morello horses used in the Middle Ages for transport, and the production of Sangiovese-based wine has always been a constant in Maremma.
