Procedure:
Once you start preparing the grilled cheese you will have to work quickly to avoid burning the bread, so everything must be within reach.
Grease all the slices of bread, only on one side. Then heat the pan on the stove, without adding oil or other fats. Place the first slice of bread in the pan, placing the buttered portion on the surface of the pan, and place the melted cheese on top.
Cover with the other slice of bread, and immediately turn the sandwich so obtained, helping with a spatula or two wooden spoons so as not to burn. Turn again after a couple of minutes, and repeat this operation several times, so as to bake the bread and melt the cheese without burning the bread.
When the bread has turned dark brown on both sides, and you will see that the slice of cheese melted, you need to remove the sandwich so obtained from the pan, and start preparing a new sandwich by repeating the same operations.
Once the preparation of these sandwiches is finished, it is advisable to cut them in half diagonally before serving them: this is in fact the way they are presented in the United States, which makes them not too big and suitable to be eaten even without the use of a plate or napkin.
You can serve accompanied grilled cheese with a vegetable soup or fries for a substantial snack.
If you want to prepare a more authentic dish, try to get slices of cheddar.
